This paper analyzes the status of the Tunisian military before and after the country's 2011 revolution. It specifically discusses 1) the marginalization of the armed forces under former Presidents Bourguiba and Ben Ali; 2) the rise of General Rachid Ammar after Ben Ali’s ouster; 3) the transition of the military from a personally controlled to institutional body; 4) how former President Marzouki coup-proofed the armed forces; 5) the subsequent improvement of the military's status; and 6) the integration of retired officers into Tunisia’s civil society.
