This paper 1) explains Salafism's role in the Arab Spring; 2) contends that equating it with jihadism wrongly overlooks the growth of non-violent Salafi political groups in North Africa, the Middle East; and 3) argues that including these groups in existing political processes and structures can indeed promote democracy and undermine violent extremism.
