This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DD&R) process in Indonesia's Aceh province since the August 2005 signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement. The paper sets out the political and economic framework of both the conflict and the MoU, summarizes the steps and measures involved in the DD&R process and presents conclusions and lessons learned. The paper argues that the security situation in Aceh has stabilized since the signing of the MoU, yet, mistrust between the parties remains deeply rooted.
