This edition of the Swiss Military Revue features five articles on assorted aspects of military power, three of which are in German, one in French and one in English. The texts specifically examine 1) the strategic significance of Zapad 2017, the joint strategic military exercise conducted by the Russian and Belarusian armed forces in the fall of 2017; 2) Russia’s Aerospace Forces (VKS) and their engagement in aerial operations in Syria; 3) Switzerland’s Defense Attaché network and its continued relevance as a tool for representing Swiss military interests abroad; 4) the formation and deployment of combat groups in the German and American armed forces; and 5) the symbolic significance of military initiation rituals.
