This paper primarily looks at gender mainstreaming in the Kenyan security sector, to include the roles women play in the Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) and the cultural impediments that are holding female soldiers back. The text’s authors also review 1) the efforts to improve the overall status of women in Kenya; 2) the roles of women in the security sector across Africa; and 3) the international policy framework that exists to promote gender equality.
