This publication analyzes the security cooperation of Europe with Japan in the Indo-Pacific. More specifically, it looks at how different European states balance their economic interest in strong ties with China with their political and strategic interest in Japan, including its strategic response to Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative. The paper concludes that Europe and Japan, which consider a liberal and rules-based international order to be a core interest, are natural partners and that there is momentum for increased security cooperation between the two.
