According to this study, US military power is no longer capable of supporting the country’s commitments. A major reason why is that since 2011 Washington has steadily cut military spending, despite the ongoing challenges posed by China, Russia, Iran, North Korea and international terrorist organizations. Given the current state of affairs, the text’s authors concludes that the US can 1) decrease its global commitments; 2) live with greater risk and hope that its commitments aren’t tested; or 3) increase spending and restore its ‘strategic solvency’. Yes, the authors ultimately back Option #3.
