This study takes a broad look at the US’s defense strategy in the Middle East. It specifically analyzes 1) the history of Washington’s involvement in what remains a strategically important region; 2) the security threat posed by a rising Iran; and 3) the ongoing difficulties of containing violent jihadist groups. The text’s authors conclude matters by outlining a comprehensive strategy to counter Iran. It stresses the utility of active missile defenses and an aggressive campaign of political warfare.
