In August 2015, about a year after elections that were widely viewed as credible and transparent, Guinea-Bissau President José Mário Vaz dissolved the government of Prime Minister Domingos Simões Pereira, plunging the country into political and institutional crisis. Ahead of the country’s March 2019 legislative elections, this publication provided an insight into the situation in Guinea-Bissau by looking at 1) the origins of the 2015 crisis; 2) how partisan tensions have weakened state institutions; 3) the difficulties the country has experienced in recovering from the crisis; 4) Guinea-Bissau’s fragile electoral process, and 5) the importance of institutional reforms for Guinea-Bissau’s long-term stability.
