This report examines dynamics concerning violent extremist organizations (VEOs) operating in the Lake Chad region. More specifically, the text’s authors explore 1) the factors that have enabled the development of militant groups in the region; 2) regional and national military responses to the jihadist military organization Boko Haram; and 3) non-military responses to VEOs in the region. The piece concludes with seven recommendations for national actors and three for international stakeholders on how to improve efforts to address violent extremism in the region.
