This report takes a close look at the Obama Administration’s FY 2017 US defense budget request, which totals $590.5 billion. More specifically, the text first delves into the government’s topline budget request, the Budget Control Act spending limits that are still in effect, and the Overseas Contingency Operations budget, which has become a routine way to secure “backdoor” funding. The text then zeros in on six particular categories of defense spending and reviews defense-related funding outside of the Pentagon’s own budget. In terms of conclusions, the text’s author notes that the FY 2017 request continues the trend in investing in high-end military capabilities.
