This issue of the CAD provides an overview of the Georgian presidential elections in which voters went to the polls to elect a successor to Mikhiel Saakashvili. Martha Beard notes that the election capped off a year in which Georgia's democratic institutions have been strengthened, though there are clear challenges ahead, particularly in defining the future roles of Saakashvili and Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili. Tornike Sharashenidze examines what the rise of non-charismatic leaders will mean for Georgia once the big men are gone, suggesting optimistically the development of a stable parliamentary democracy.
