This issue of the Caucasus Analytical Digest examines the situation for women in the South Caucasus. In general, women are poorly represented in the political life of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. As a result, the key issues concerning them are less prominent and receive less attention from the authorities. Women often have the most influence in areas related to family life and social activism. Key problems limiting female participation in politics include gender stereotypes, traditional views of gender roles, women's financial dependence on others, and low self-confidence among women. Even gender quotas are not always effective in increasing representation.
