This article examines the cult of Hafiz al‐Assad – the Syrian regime's instrument of cultural domination – and its transformation during the reign of Bashar al‐Assad. Furthermore, the author analyzes the cult's effects on Syrian people and their reaction to the cult. Finally, the author examines its limitations and its vulnerability to external shocks, which became evident during the protests that started in early 2011.
